Reconnecting with a friend who suggested an outing to a rodeo in Feversham, we had a great day and the rain mostly held off, though the corral was a tad wet for the competitions ...

While Grant positioned near the pens and mostly shot shorter focal lengths, the requirement to get down on knees for other spectators to see over us motivated me to head to the other end and shoot some longer glass to capture the action. These images were shot with the venerable EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS III USM on Canon mount adapter to my EOS R5.

Well ... after considerable deliberation over price increases from the print house I use for my calendars, I've decided to go ahead with a smaller order this year, for the 10th Edition of 'Through the Seasons'

I started publishing a calendar 10 years ago. The original intent was to have a project that would focus my attention on review and selection of past images, requiring me to be critical of my own work. Additionally it provided another way to showcase for my images and make them available for purchase in small quantities. Continuing on over time it evolved into a gift we gave members of the family at Christmas, with sales to a few friends and clients here and there.

I have one copy of each edition tucked away for posterity and of course I have the source images, some of which have been printed and framed for the house or cottage.

In this, the year of COVID, we will not be getting together with the extended family for Christmas celebrations and with printing price increases I've decided to cut back on the number of calendars ordered. Mailing a calendar out to those we won't see in person just added more to the cost and the logistics of making socially distanced visits to drop them off didn't make sense either given it would require us to enter COVID red-zones.

But there will be a '2021 Through the Seasons' calendar, they will just be more ... 'exclusive'.

Another weekend, another weekend hike with Jordan. This time, we hiked in Forks of the Credit Provincial Park and headed for the mill ruins at Cataract Falls.

Unfortunately, the trail past the ruins and viewing platform have been closed and well fenced-off while replacement of the platform is under consideration. Not to be thwarted in our attempts to get a view of the ruins and falls, we followed the trail to the north side of the river and turned onto the Elora-Cataract Trailway and found a path down the upper slope of the gorge to the rail line and crossed to a fenced location where we could overlook the ruins and river with a view upstream.

It was 5 years since I had last visited and 10 or 15 since I first visited. Sadly, the increased foot traffic and use of the park over that time has changed it's character ... not for the better. Like many parks and trails that see overuse, footpaths are well worn but the infuriating signs of disrespectful visitors, ignorant of their impact, were far too numerous. Discarded used diapers, food containers, dozens of empty water bottles, tissue and toilet paper were to be found in the trailside bushes ... without having to look very hard :-(

A trip to Silvercreek Conservation Area for a weekend outing had me reaching for my infrared modified camera and hoping that the lush green of the forest would provide suitable scenery.

A short way into the hike I noticed a small sapling bending over the downstream watercourse and thought to make it the main focus of a composition. I found a route down to the creek from the adjacent trail and started framing up the scene. Realizing that the 11-22mm lens I had would require me to get closer to the subject tree, I started working my way along. When I next experimented with a composition, I was still too far away to emphasize that tree ... but ... a larger serpentine trunk made for a perfect additional point of interest and the main focus of the image.

2020 Through The Seasons Wall Calendar - Limited Availability

This is the 9th year for my "Through the Seasons" calendar project. Started as a Christmas gift project for immediate family members, distribution has grown a bit over the years as more family and some clients have requested copies. This year I've decided to pre-order a few copies and offer them for sale.

"Through the Seasons" showcases a dozen of my images from a single year, each made during the month in which they are displayed. Images may or may not have been previously published in this blog, Facebook, or other social media.

Satin finish calendar pages are 8.5" x 11", wire bound and the calendar opens to hang at approx 17" h x 11" w. Pages can be removed and framed for display ... once you've had the use of the calendar for a year of course ;-) As always, single Fine Art prints are available by contacting me directly for a quote.

They are available to the first 10 customers for $25 + $5 postage via Canada Post, CDN funds, shipping to Canada only. To place an order and arrange payment, email me at djenglandphotography@gmail.com. I'll be placing a second order that should arrive just before Christmas if there are more takers.

Here is a collage of the images included ...

brew monster
Ever come back from a photo outing and Blah .... everything is just Blah?

Why not take a step back, walk away for a bit or set out on a little creative journey to try some alternate processing?

A recent outing with one of my photo groups took us to a local micro brewery / pub for an hour of shooting before the "paying customers" started rolling in to quench their thirst. I had taken a couple of my lesser used lenses to see what I might be able to create.

As it turned out I spent more time chatting, with some of the others I hadn't seen in a while, than shooting ( I did have a very nice Oatmeal Stout though ;-). When I got home and downloaded the images, there wasn't anything that looked worthy of further attention and I was disappointed ...

... fast forward to the next morning and a few clicks into an editing app that I use from time to time and ... things got a little better. I ended up spending a few pleasurable hours trying out some different options while listening to some great music ... nice way to spend a Sunday morning.

After 36 hours of non stop rain, with more of the same in the forecast over the weekend, I was looking forward to a change of venue, some quite time at the cottage with a book and a hot beverage ...

... so I was surprised when a dry road and no sign of rain earlier in the day greeted us on the highway just north of Wiarton. A few kilometres later there was hint of sunlight breaking through in a think band along the western horizon.

We turned into the cottage driveway just as sun was setting. I hurried down to the shore to grab a few quick images before I missed what might be the only sun I'd see for a few more days. But there was more ...

Saturday evening, another wondrous sunset, and such intensity !

Intensity
The colours were so intense in the immediate sky around the sun, I decided to zoom in as much as possible to isolate that section of the sky.

Phoenix Rising

I've been looking for another location to shoot sunset photos now that the sun dips below the horizon further north, past the mouth of Hay Bay. So when we arrived at the cottage for a weekend stay recently with timing and conditions just right ... I grabbed a camera and headed out to investigate.

When shooting sunsets over the water, I often use the reflecting colours of the sky and textures of the clouds as foreground. With this location, I had envisioned having some of the rock along the shore or the small islands available to position in the frame as foreground elements ... as it turns out, here I could compose to use both.

This particular sunset was glorious and I spend a considerable amount of time making quite a number of images at different spots, with different compositions. You can see a couple of the others here and here.

... the best part, if I can't get sunset from our shore, this location is not far from us, actually all I needed to do was walk all of a couple hundred meters down the road :-)

Spring on the Bruce ... this weekend I wanted to make images showing the arrival of spring.

Driving north to the cottage after work on Friday, I could see that with the arrival of spring, the snow cover had begun to diminish. Large roadside drifts now seemed less uhhmmm ... large. Open areas of the landscape were laid bare from the warm stare of the sun and spring rains. The runoff waters had begun to flow.

Arriving near dusk, there was still enough light to see the frozen surface of the bay flooded from the afternoon rain, the setting sun reflecting off the still puddle surfaces. After unloading the car and getting settled in, I went back to have a look and it was gone, lost to the darkness, at least until tomorrow, I thought.

Waking in the morning, it was still gone. A fresh dusting of (April) snow had arrived overnight and with temperatures below freezing, spring's complexion had changed. Undaunted, I still had in mind to make images depicting the arrival of spring this weekend, so off in search of them I went, with Lynn and Murphy.

A drive down Warner Bay Rd. and Eagle Rd. provided some new roadside scenery that whet my photographic appetite.

Photo of the Week 2014-03-10 *Special Edition* - Our First Winter on "the Bruce"

It has been an amazing leg of my photographic journey, this first winter on "the Bruce".

... but it all really started a few years ago with my first photography trip to Tobermory. A couple of us decided to make the trek from Guelph for a couple of days photographing winter on "the Bruce". I was taken by the uniqueness of the area and after introducing Lynn to it, she has been touched by it's magic as well. So touched were we that we now own a recreational property there and have just returned from what will, sadly, be the last days of our first winter. We absolutely loved every moment of it.

Spring 2014 officially arrives on March 19 and there are a whole bunch of .... errrr, ummm people that have been begging for it's arrival, some since the first snow. Pfffftttttt !

I thought I'd provide a short slide show of images showing just some of what I experienced by embracing my first winter on "the Bruce" (slideshow requires flash) .

Family Day 2014

Well, we asked for a holiday in February, they called it "Family Day" and gave it to us so we decided to start making good use of it. Last year we met up with Matt in TO and went for a winter hike and picnic in High Park. This year we picked up Matt and headed for the Distillery District for a look around and a bit of lunch.
