brew monster
Ever come back from a photo outing and Blah .... everything is just Blah?

Why not take a step back, walk away for a bit or set out on a little creative journey to try some alternate processing?

A recent outing with one of my photo groups took us to a local micro brewery / pub for an hour of shooting before the "paying customers" started rolling in to quench their thirst. I had taken a couple of my lesser used lenses to see what I might be able to create.

As it turned out I spent more time chatting, with some of the others I hadn't seen in a while, than shooting ( I did have a very nice Oatmeal Stout though ;-). When I got home and downloaded the images, there wasn't anything that looked worthy of further attention and I was disappointed ...

... fast forward to the next morning and a few clicks into an editing app that I use from time to time and ... things got a little better. I ended up spending a few pleasurable hours trying out some different options while listening to some great music ... nice way to spend a Sunday morning.

Community events, ceremonies and celebrations present a great opportunities to photograph something different than might be the norm for me and for you. Having a camera along and ready allows me to capture images at any point of the event or pre/post event moments.

A recent visit to Ottawa while Winterlude 2018 was in it's last weekend, provided opportunity to visit the ice sculpture displays in Confederation Park on a chilly after dinner walk. From previous years, I knew it would be a great opportunity for some night photography with the displays colourfully lit and glowing in the dark.

This blocky ice structure lit from below caught my eye and beckoned for me to make this frigid abstract image ...

For those interested in the geeky bits, I was using my EOS M3 auto ISO (1600 for this image) a 18-55 mm lens shot at f/4 for 1/125 sec. So there's more than enough light to capture the glowing ice and if you step back or zoom out, you can keep the background dark with a little - exposure compensation to really isolate the sculptures.

If a foot falls in the forest and no one else is around, does it make a sound?
...
...
Yes, a very, very soothing sound.

forest footfalls
Something wasn't right, something was missing ... oh ya, that peaceful walk in the woods I was meaning to take on freshly fallen snow.

Even with a considerable amount of time spent outside puttering about, clearing snow from the driveway and parking area both Saturday and Sunday mornings, with having made time for the first x-country ski of the season, with time outside to breathe in the fresh crisp air, there was still something ...

I needed to walk among the trees, feel the crunch of snowshoes, feel the icy touch of falling snow, hear the beating of my heart, hear the silence of the forest ...

footprints in paradise

Snow fell heavily at times this weekend at the cottage. It had already begun snowing by the time we arrived well after dark. The driveway was clear enough to be were able to get in, park, unload, and settle in to enjoy the fireplace as the cottage warmed up ... leaving the snow clearing until the morning.

Morning light arrived the next day bringing more snow. Falling steadily, straight down, with not a whisper of wind, a blanket of peacefulness was covering everything around by the time I had donned my gear and leashed Murphy for the morning ritual. Stepping out into the crisp still air, we took a deep breath (actually Murphy peed) and set out down the road to see what was about ...
