Landsharks
"Look up, look down, look all around" ... a very good bit of advice for all photographers.

As photographers we are always on the lookout for the next image, camera in hand or not. For some of us it is literally a constant preoccupation ... Whether we are out with the intent to photograph or not.

'Always being on the lookout' at it's full extent includes maintaining a 360* awareness. So often, it is all too easy to become fixated on one particular subject or in on direction. Say you're walking along the beach early one morning looking at the horizon, trying to capture the colours of sunrise in the sky over breaking waves. Concentrating on those oh so very subtle shades of pink and orange in the sky opposite to the sun, waiting for that optimum moment when they are at their peak, you may miss ... the Landsharks at your feet !

Sometimes it the view just before the view ...

winter morning sky - through a gap

...  and you need to keep your eyes up and creative mind open while you're out photographing.

I almost missed the framing of this scene by the snow covered cedars as I kept my eyes down to maintain sure footing on the ice covered trail leading down to the shore.

Being mindful to keep a photographic eye open as you make your way on whatever trek you're on can be harder than you'd think. In winter, maintaining sound footing in deep snow or on ice challenges you to keep your eyes down lest you misstep, stumble and fall... the fascinating winter scenes challenge you to keep your eyes up lest your view is at your feet and you miss that "money shot".

What a wonderful challenge for those of us who love to photograph outdoors in winter. We can venture out to a wonderland of sights, sounds and sensations to behold and capture our vision, through the lens.

Eyes down and tread safely ... Eyes up to find that "money shot".

In late December the water of the bay had not yet started to freeze ... but it was blue and cold, so very cold.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !

Welcome to 2019 and the continuation of 'a Photographic Journey'. My 2019 Calendar, 'Through the Seasons', is published in it's limited quantity and distributed to family and a few clients who generously support my work.

Photographically, 2019 began for me with another 'First Light Challenge', the 11th year I have taken up the camera and trekked out to capture my world at sunrise on the first day of a new year. On the way back, following a familiar road, in the peaceful tranquility of newly fallen snow, I reflected on the possibilities that lay ahead ...

The Road, now more Frequently Travelled - B&W
Fortunately, now I get to more frequently travel this road ... and the possibilities are endless.

Best Wishes to all for Health and Happiness throughout 2019
