Photo of the Week 2020-01-27

Other than a recent snowshoe hike up on 'the Bruce', I haven't been out for photography lately so it's back into the archive for this 'Photo of the Week'. I have a few marked for possible posting in just such a situation.

Stones and Cedar Cabin
This one is from back in 2010 ... when we actually had a bit of snow. It's from a photo trek with a couple of buddies and I came across it recently while searching for past images of the Lion's Head Lighthouse for a previous post.

Finally, some snow to inspire my shooting up on the Bruce Peninsula ...

January Sunset
I'm looking forward to an outing on Monday hoping that the fresh blanket of snow hasn't been disturbed too much and that some snow remains on the trees but I couldn't resist making some images Sunday evening of the sunset over Lake Huron with a little snow in the foreground.

Photo of the Week 2020-01-13

With yesterday's storm that whipped up winds and waves on Georgian Bay, the Lion's Head Lighthouse was battered to pieces. It had suffered beatings in recent years but with water levels much higher in 2019, waves easily topped the breakwater and began taking their toll on the wooden structure. Yesterday was just the last straw.

I'm sure the community will rally to rebuild it's likeness again, but it may somehow lose a measure of it's former charm. I'm not entirely familiar with the history of the lighthouse, but I recently read that it was a replacement of an earlier structure and not the original. Thee was also talk of moving the structure back from it's prominent position at the tip of the harbour breakwater ... a shame, but understandable.

Here is my photo tribute to the iconic landmark ...

... and in closing, an older image I have haven't posted before but I have it printed large and hung in the cottage.

Photo of the Week 2020-01-06

Now that winter has arrived, there should be more B&W imagery from me. There usually is when colours are gone and contrast is high with the bright white snow blanketing the ground.

I'd been on the lookout for fog and possible hoar frost in these colder temperatures and not too long ago conditions were right. Lynn had mentioned frost after returning from her morning walk with Murphy and that was enough to get me grabbing camera gear and a travel mug of coffee to head out for a morning drive.

Happy New Year 2020

HAPPY NEW YEAR !
Photographically, another year begins with the 'First Light Challenge' ... the 12th year I have taken up the camera and trekked out to capture my world at sunrise on the first day of a new year.

This year was a bit different, Lynn and Murphy accompanied me as I got up and out early on New Years Day to head into the village to make this panorama at 8:06 am, official sunrise here in Tobermory. It's been a few years since I've had the company Alan for the tradition he started and I welcomed having someone to share the experience with.

Wishing you and yours, health and happiness through another year.
