WELCOME TO A NEW YEAR !

I'm glad to be here and have anyone following, continue to do so. While I'm in 2025, my photo posting hasn't made it out of September 2024 when I was in Scotland. I'm still working through the images that I made during that 12 day self drive tour. I still have images from the last few days to work on and share. The complete set can be see via this link to my flickr account Scotland 2024. I'm adding to the album as I finish processing more from the trip.

This week I bring you to the Isle of Sky ... wait ... we were they with last week's post. Well ... we're still there with this week's post. This time it's Neist Point and the iconic lighthouse. As with many locations I photograph, I make a number of different compositions, some horizontal orientation, others vertical as the subject may warrant. With it getting later in the day and my companion not wanting to be on the remote, narrow roads in the dark, I had to select a position to get some images. Fortunately I had scouted the location via Google Maps and with some delicate tramping over soggy ground found a suitable spot ... or maybe I should have just looked for the gaggle of photogs with tripods and long lenses ;-)

There is so much more to explore photographically with this location. Trails lead from the clifftop down to the lighthouse and the rock peak on the left is accessible for what I am certain is an exhilarating vantage point. An then there's night photography with starry skies and auroras ... the options go one.

Photo of the Week 2020-01-13

With yesterday's storm that whipped up winds and waves on Georgian Bay, the Lion's Head Lighthouse was battered to pieces. It had suffered beatings in recent years but with water levels much higher in 2019, waves easily topped the breakwater and began taking their toll on the wooden structure. Yesterday was just the last straw.

I'm sure the community will rally to rebuild it's likeness again, but it may somehow lose a measure of it's former charm. I'm not entirely familiar with the history of the lighthouse, but I recently read that it was a replacement of an earlier structure and not the original. Thee was also talk of moving the structure back from it's prominent position at the tip of the harbour breakwater ... a shame, but understandable.

Here is my photo tribute to the iconic landmark ...

... and in closing, an older image I have haven't posted before but I have it printed large and hung in the cottage.

First Light 2016

For me, 'First Light' started when a friend laid down the challenge to get out together and capture a photograph at official sunrise on the first day of a new year. Over the time since that first light in 2008, we've managed to get out together 5 of 9 years and the remaining 4 we've gone out on our own, wherever we were. For me, recently, that has been in Tobermory, as we're up at the cottage for some winter holidays

On New Year's Day, up in the dark hours before dawn, a quick coffee (or two), location selected, gear prepared and bundled up, I headed out with the idea of capturing the Tobermory Lighthouse at Big Tub at the moment of sunrise 2016-01-01. I arrived at the location and stepped out of the car into the cold morning wind, snow whipping violently about. I knew there would be no "sun" in the "sunrise" again this year. There really hasn't been for any of the years since 2008, though in 2012 it was close.

This year, decided to try a different 'look' and selected my 8mm fisheye on the 7DII. The unique perspective of the "fisheye" lens was a challenge and wasn't quite able to set up for the composition I had envisioned, but time was running out and I had to get set. 8:06 am quickly approaching. After positioning the tripod and locking down the camera, I had a few minutes to spare ... and then blizzard conditions hit. The lens and I quickly became covered in snow falling in the lee of the cedars at water's edge.

With a quick shake of the head, wipe of the lens ... "click" it was done. Another "first light" challenge was in the books.

...  she said, "I think you should make one of those in the tall narrow ones you do."

... so I did :-)

... another image from my visit to the Bruce Peninsula.

Big Tub Lighthouse

Tobermory virtually shuts down after Thanksgiving, at least as far as I could see when I was there last week. The hotels, resorts and restaurants were for all intent and purpose "closed for the season".

After posting images, I received several comments from friends who were intrigued about photographing on the Bruce Peninsula in winter. Most had visited during warmer weather to capture the glorious sunrises and sunsets, and the scenic beauty of the Niagara Escarpment along Georgian Bay. I too was captivated by what this area has to offer ... a return in the heart of winter is in order.
