' pietà '

The local photo group I belong to made arrangements for access to the interior of the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate. With some restrictions, we were generously allowed to roam about and photograph at our leisure for a couple of hours during one of the quieter times.

When we arrived, I dropped my gear off in a corner that would not interfere with the others, set up for a pre-planned shot of the main ceiling and then wandered around. As I explored, I noticed sunlight through the stained glass windows was creating coloured pools at various points around the interior. I watched these points and waited until the late afternoon sun reached a position where light from one window spilled onto this sculpture.

The Hour of Colour

' Main Event '

I've written about photographing sunset many times for this blog and yet here is another ...

Depending where you are, sunsets can offer over an hour of colour, perhaps even two hours for those intent on taking in the full show. It all really gets started just before the main event (official sunset time) and carries on for quite a wile after.

At our little vantage point along the shore of Hay Bay, I've noticed others who've come to watch the show. They often leave after the sun's orb disappears below the horizon, They are cheating themselves out of some of the best a sunset has to offer.

Next time hang around and enjoy the full show ;-)

Photo of the Week 2023-04-10

I haven't been out shooting much in the last couple of weeks. Photography activity has mostly consisted of preparing, printing and framing some images to refresh those at the cottage.

Though the other morning I looked outside and noticed the rising sun was spilling onto some of the crocus that had bloomed in our gardens. I reached for a camera and my 70mm macro to get down on my knees and do some close up work.

' morning crocus '

This particular flower had conveniently dropped a petal down such that I could get a view inside looking from the side.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend asked if I would meet with him to discuss infrared photography. He had seen some of my work and was curious about the equipment I used and processes involved. He has a piano service business in town and we met at his showroom / workshop.

I was treated to a quick tour around before we got started. Now my knowledge of pianos is very limited to say the least, but I was intrigued by the patterns, textures and details I saw. So after we concluded our chat about infrared, I asked if I could come back some time and wander around with my camera(s). He graciously agreed and when we met again several days later, I was prepared to let myself loose... in detail and shallow depth of field mode.

' tightly strung '

Using a couple of different lenses, my 70mm f/2.8 macro and 50mm f/1.4, I returned to a style of photography that I have not enjoyed for some time. A handful or more years ago, shallow depth of focus was something I used quite frequently in my images.
