Finding subject matter of interest at a rural 'farm equipment & tractor parts supply' location (aka tractor junkyard) with a 105mm macro lens, shooting close up though not necessarily macro ...

In addition to taking my infrared modified camera and shooting for high contrast B&W (see the recent images in this album) in the bright sun, I also had a digital body with the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 mounted to see what I could capture with fixed focal length and close up capabilit
y.

Here is a screen capture of additional processed images likely be posted to my social media streams in the coming days.

Offering far more than "just old tractors", there are patterns, textures, shapes and colours to explore. The freedom of experimenting and playing with compositions nourishes the creative soul.

Photo of the Week 2023-04-03

A couple of weeks ago, a friend asked if I would meet with him to discuss infrared photography. He had seen some of my work and was curious about the equipment I used and processes involved. He has a piano service business in town and we met at his showroom / workshop.

I was treated to a quick tour around before we got started. Now my knowledge of pianos is very limited to say the least, but I was intrigued by the patterns, textures and details I saw. So after we concluded our chat about infrared, I asked if I could come back some time and wander around with my camera(s). He graciously agreed and when we met again several days later, I was prepared to let myself loose... in detail and shallow depth of field mode.

Using a couple of different lenses, my 70mm f/2.8 macro and 50mm f/1.4, I returned to a style of photography that I have not enjoyed for some time. A handful or more years ago, shallow depth of focus was something I used quite frequently in my images.

' from the archive '

So it's day whatever of the COVID pandemic state of emergency and here in Ontario, the government is just starting to ease the restrictions that have been placed on us all to help stop the spread.

I'm not sure how long it will take for things to get back to normal. In all likelihood it will never be the way it was and we will all just adjust to what becomes the new normal. Whatever that looks like, there are some certainties that help me focus on moving forward. Of course there are family and friends and I very much look forward to the days when we can gather as we once did. Soon, I hope the parks, nature trails and golf courses will begin to open up because that's where do most of my walking and I like a variety of choices.

In the more immediate future, there is photography, actually going out and making some images. As much as I have enjoyed several weeks of exploring the archive, there is nothing like the satisfaction I get from actually getting out for photography. I only got part way to 2012 in my image library so hopefully there are more diamonds in the rough tucked away for future rainy days.

At some point not too far away, some new captures will begin to appear on the blog. But for this week, here's something from the archive I thought appropriate given how the subject looks very similar to all of the visual representations of the Corona Virus that have been permeating the media through this crisis.

' COVID, be gone, a poem '

COVID be gone in the depths of dawn
May we rise to be infection free
The isolated days so many are feeling
Our minds sit in darkness and are in need of healing
Our leaders work tirelessly to bring us comfort
As the death toll rises we grieve with such loss
Distancing from loved ones we carry our cross
The days seem endless with so full of despair
Where is the light with no end in sight
The darkness we must overcome
Stand strong and fight as a world we must become one.

Photo of the Week 2020-03-30

I'm glad to have photography to help keep me busy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Every time I get the urge to go out as I would in "normal" life, I head to the computer and click away into my image archive, ultimately finding something to occupy my time for a few minutes and possibly hours ...

Already, I've been reminded of so many people, places and things from early in my over a decade of digital shooting ... and I've only really been concentrating on the Urbex / Rurex content that I have.

Fascinating to me are the details to be found in abandoned locations ...

I enjoy going back through my library of images. There are many reminders of things past. James, my son Jordan's veiled chameleon is now with another owner, but he was such a great and challenging subject for my 150mm macro.
