I've been making greeting cards featuring my images for the past several years. It started with a series of cards I made in support of selling my framed fine art prints at the Guelph Studio Tour a few years back. They didn't sell well at the time, likely due to how I priced them in comparison to those available from others at the time ... but that's another discussion.

After the tour, I was left with a number of cards and ended up using them myself, at suitable times. I still have a few of those original cards tucked away. Since that initial batch however, I have continued to make cards, singles for birthdays and special occasions and an annual series each year for the family Christmas Card.

I always make a card for Lynn's birthday and this year I wanted to use an image of the boys since they were coming home to celebrate the occasion. I knew she'd appreciate something that included them so I selected something from our walk down to the beach on our recent visit trip to Toronto for Thanksgiving dinner.

I also decided to continue my experimentation with post processing applications and techniques on this image to create something different from a rather simple shot. I printed the card and a companion fine art print for Lynn to pin up in her workspace so she can be close to her boys.

Family Day 2014

Well, we asked for a holiday in February, they called it "Family Day" and gave it to us so we decided to start making good use of it. Last year we met up with Matt in TO and went for a winter hike and picnic in High Park. This year we picked up Matt and headed for the Distillery District for a look around and a bit of lunch.

Where do all the photos go?

Thanks to attending a 50th Anniversary Celebration where there were boards filled with photos of family moments, family snapshots if you will, that have resided in albums, shoe boxes, photo lab envelopes and lord knows what else for ... well decades, I have been stirred to make a committment to print one such snapshot from my digital libraries each week as a 4x6. Although I print my more "artistic" work often and even frame and hang a lot for personal display, I have not printed the more family related images with any regularity.
Today I started with an image of my youngest son, Jordan, taken while we were visiting my mother on her birthday recently. He was just sitting there listening to the conversation and I said " ... just sit there like that, now look at me ...  ".

Click! And there you have it. A little more than a snapshot, but family moment for the archives, printed and now I need to find a shoebox ...

Acoustic J

My son Jordan took a break from studying this weekend to play a bit of guitar and I grabbed the opportunity to set up a single light and make some portraits . It was good chance to try out my small octagonal softbox for speedlites.

I need to do this type of thing more often.
