Waiting for sunset, I worked compositions of the shoreline and rock outcrops at water's edge, Stone Beach, Lake Superior, Algoma District, ON

It often happens after arriving at a location for a planned photo opportunity, there is time available to explore further. Whether waiting for others in the group, for a planned shot to develop, or quickly getting the planned shot, I try to make best use this extra time and opportunity.

The image above was captured during this "extra time", waiting for the sun to set across the vast Superior horizon.

Photo of the Week 2023-10-30

One week ago I had just returned from the shores of Lake Superior where I joined a handful of other photographers for several days of shooting immersed in the outstanding Algoma District of Ontario. The Lake Superior Wild & Scenic Photography Retreat hosted by Andrew McLachlan and operated out of Rock Island Lodge had long been on my wish list, or rather it's predecessor had. Since travelling to the area for work over a decade ago, then researching the area for solo photo exploits, I found it was home to an organized photo workshop and the seed was sewn.

The weeks and days preceding my return to this stunningly beautiful part of Ontario, had me struggling with my photography, feeling uninspired. Though it's happened before, given the time of year when fall colours were vibrant, I was in an odd place creatively and hopeful that the coming experience would see me through it.

The drive up Highway 17 from Sault Ste. Marie to Wawa, provided opportunity for stops at Chippewa Falls, Sand River and Old Woman Bay to test the waters and whet my appetite (puns intended). Though we would return to two of these locations in the coming days, I was able to get the creative wheel turning again ...

... then after arriving at the lodge, meeting our hosts and the other photographers, it was time for a first sunset shoot out on the shore.

You can find the images from this outing in my flickr album "Algoma" along with photos from my previous visits to the area. Most recent images will be added at the top of the album page and expect a few more over the coming days and maybe week or so. Yes the trip was that successful, I'm still working through the captures.

Modern city architecture captured in infrared ... from a Saturday morning outing to Downtown Hamilton, ON with a reflections theme in mind.

At the suggestion of a friend, for both theme and location, we met for a morning photo walkabout in and around the Farmer's Market area of Hamilton. He had the idea of capturing reflections in windows of buildings in the downtown core. The theme was selected by a random theme generator he programmed and primed with 20 or so selected themes. The idea behind the generator, to hone photographic skills and vision through pursuit of images relating to a theme while out shooting. I think it worked very well, as did his selection of location for the reflections theme.

Tanglewood (in colour)

Reviewing the image catalogue, looking for images from Guelph, I came across this version of an image originally processed and published in B&W.

Over time preferences may change. With new processing software development and skills, alternate or improved renditions of old images may be possible. It's not often that I go back and re-envision an image but it's an interesting exercise, one I should perhaps explore more often.

This image, made shortly after I'd upgraded one of my camera bodies to the full-frame 5D MkIII, caught my eye again a while back. At that time I reprocessed a colour version and saved it off to the hard drive ... and kinda forgot about it until I stumbled on it recently.

I must admit, I have a rear end fetish ... when it comes to 911's

Reflections in the black paint of a late 80's 911 Turbo
- 2nd Annual Downtown Guelph Exotic Car Show -

Photographing cars at shows can be difficult for a number of reasons, access, lighting, reflections, people getting in the way or the shot. I've found that shots in tight, capturing only details are the ones I end up liking most. The others ... well they're mostly just shots of a car.

Classic Reflections
There's something about a Porsche, a 911 to be more precise. It would have been better if this car were beside another 911 and I could have caught them reflecting in each other's paint.

There were quite a few exotics at the show in Guelph over the weekend, but I only had eyes for the Porches ... the 911's

... sigh ...

Photo of the Week 2015-03-30

I've been working on processing a number of images for a Fine Art series for well over a year. Yes, well over a year. Made on a trip to Italy in 2013, I have been using a different processing approach to transform the original captures into something unusual, at least for me.

The idea for the series came to me while reviewing images from the trip and reliving what I experienced while making them. Not just the memory of being back there but the sense I had while working to capture what I saw and felt at the time. Struck by the knowledge that these scenes and locations were far older than anywhere I had been before, if I closed my eyes I could almost feel the past. It was as if there were echoes of previous times merging with the present. For this series I attempted to create the visual equivalent..

"ECHOES" (a work in process)

Echoes are reflections, arriving some time after the direct sound
Echoes are reflections of prior events
Echoes grow fainter with time, some blur, others twist, turn and move

Echoes can be indistinguishable from the original

These are a few of the images that I'm happy enough with to share. The series still remains very much a work in process. My approach to processing may continue to be refined over time as I select more images to transform.

Ultimately, I'd love to see these up in an Italian restaurant or banquet hall. I'll have to work on that.

I'm always interested in feedback from those who follow my blog or those who just stumble on this post. Feel free to use the comment section or send me a personal message.
