Visiting family in Ottawa recently provided a number of opportunities to shoot in unfamiliar urban areas. A portion of a walk one afternoon took me through the Earth Sciences complex of Gov Can along Booth St. where I found the architecture interesting to photograph.

Very utilitarian institutional in design aesthetic ... but at the same time interesting in it's straight lines and repeating patterns.

Again ... looking back through my image library and I've come across something that catches my attention and makes me wonder why I didn't take it further.

' M M M Massey Hall '

Over many years of making images, some are bound to be overlooked. Particularly during periods of prolific shooting, it's easy to let quality shots slip through the cracks. A while back, I started working with this image in 'post' to create a multiple exposure / camera movement effect. I must not have been satisfied with the result and abandoned it to languish in the archive until it beckoned for another chance.

That chance came during a period when I'm not shooting very much and when I have been, I've just been going through the motions in an attempt to find some photo mojo. I'm hopeful that hearkening back to better photo times will help.

It's all about what is missing ...

Modern city architecture captured in infrared ... from a Saturday morning outing to Downtown Hamilton, ON with a reflections theme in mind.

At the suggestion of a friend, for both theme and location, we met for a morning photo walkabout in and around the Farmer's Market area of Hamilton. He had the idea of capturing reflections in windows of buildings in the downtown core. The theme was selected by a random theme generator he programmed and primed with 20 or so selected themes. The idea behind the generator, to hone photographic skills and vision through pursuit of images relating to a theme while out shooting. I think it worked very well, as did his selection of location for the reflections theme.

The beginning of a new series ... 'Skyward - Graphics"

These first images of buildings in Paris, ON made with my infrared (IR) converted Canon EOS M and shot with 850 nm filter to produce high contrast B&W images that I then processed to have a 'graphic' look and feel.

This project is the result of moving back to a creative formula that served me well for a number of years. Instead of always and quite possibly only, shooting in the place that I love, 'the Bruce', I'm making time for photo outings to other locations, turning my eye and camera on other subjects ... to rekindle the creative fires.

I'm very pleased with these initial results. Now I just need to make time and visit some of the other towns and smaller cities in addition to Paris so I can expand the series.
