I enjoy all of the seasons but fall is my favourite time of year for hikes and photography outdoors. After a spring and summer of fresh lush greens, there is a slow warming of colour while the greens take on a yellow hue. As temperatures drop the pace quickens, the colours rush through variations of gold, orange and red. Having only weekends with time available for photography, the change seems to happen so fast that I'm only able to capture a fraction of it through my lens.

This past weekend I went out for a drive in search of colour. Overcast skies, flat light and spits of rain here and there were not the inspiration that I had hoped for. Looking for something a bit different, I ended up in the quaint town of Elora. It's always an interesting place to photograph and this time of year I expected that there might be some colour splashed about to make for some interesting images. While I didn't find the vibrant colours in many of the areas I chose to explore, a shaft of sunlight fell on a patch of red down one alley as I walked by, and of course I had to go check it out.

Red Creeper
Soon, as fall matures and gives way to winter, this red and other warm colours will be gone. Winter will arrive with it's cool palette of tones.

Happy Thanksgiving !

Driving north on Friday, it was evident that some of the maples had decided it was time to show their stuff by Thanksgiving weekend. Fall colour had finally arrived on 'the Bruce' in some measure ... while having coffee in the pre-dawn silence early Saturday, I decided it was time for some morning exploration along roads of the North Bruce.

I have my favourite spots, they always reach out, seducing me with their beauty, trying their best to make me stop and visit. This time I would resist and push on to unfamiliar ground, leaving familiarity behind, searching for a new muse ...

Photo of the Week 2015-05-11

I've been experimenting with my image post processing lately. It's all part of the journey. Trying new things is like creative exercise, flexing the artistic muscle if you like.

An approach that simplifies the detail in my original capture causes me to look more at the graphic elements and colours of an image. It removes reality to an extent, masks the flaws that I can become obsessed with causing me to give up on an image.

For example, in this week's image, there are focus issues. The depth of field is too shallow, caused to some extent by me working hand held without a tripod, but also because I was shooting at a 135mm focal length at an oblique angle across a patch of trilliums, not wanting to step amongst them and cause any damage. Rather than give up on an image that I liked because the foreground and background were not in sharp focus, I decided to process the image with a Photoshop plug-in, Topaz Simplify, and create graphic photo-realistic like result.

In this, I see things that can help my photography, improve the original capture, strengthen my composition. Letting go a bit and trying something different can be a good thing. I'm not worried what others may say or think. After all, it's my journey.

By the way, I've widened the format of the blog post so the landscape format images are no longer cut off a bit on the right side when I post them large. Please let me know if you have any trouble viewing and if you see an improvement.

There are some interesting wildflowers on "the Bruce". The "Indian Paintbrush" caught my eye last year and I was on the lookout this spring for their return ...

a collection of brushes
I found this collection of brushes in a large patch along the side of the road leading to the cottage and spend a while trying to capture the feel of the scene.

... no photo outing this weekend so we're going back to last week and my outing to Cheltenham Badlands.

This is a view that always makes me stop and pause to take it all in. The colours are vibrant at the right time, in the right light.

After shooting for a while with Patrick last week, he made a comment about how the natural textures and contours of the eroded shale make interesting subjects for photographic study.
