' the house beyond '

While on our recent tour of Scotland, we met fellow travelers Mark and Karen from Colorado. As it turned out, Mark is a teacher of photography and fine photographer.

Lynn had called me over to a garden of daisies that Mark had been using as a foreground element in his compositions of Melrose Abbey. One challenge of photographing at the location was the intrusion of security fencing that was in place around the abbey while a structural survey is conducted. Mark had chosen to shoot the flowers low and close in the frame to block the unsightly industrial fencing and Lynn wanted me to see what he had captured. It was a lovely composition, I'd show it to you but to this point he has chosen not to publish the image so you can see my mimic of it via this link.

Conversations with Mark that followed on art, creating, composition, seeing and sharing what we were capturing were very refreshing. I have always enjoyed the interaction with other photographers. Mark's willingness to share what he was seeing through his eyes and having a fellow creative to interact with, was a welcome surprise.

While the Abbey was certainly a main focus during our stop in Melrose, Mark helped me remember that there were interesting compositions all around and to look beyond the 'snapshot'. With that in mind I made this 'POTW' by zooming in to eliminate adjacent distractions and isolate just a part of the scene allowing the trees to be used as a partial curtain that invokes curiosity as to what is beyond.

' spanning time '

For this week's photo, I'm going back a few weeks when I visited Pakenham ON to photograph this historic bridge. While revisiting the images from the day, I found this image from the east side of the bridge and decided to apply a vintage treatment with Silver Efex from the NIK Collection.

With some time to spare during a visit to Eastern Ontario and the Ottawa area, I headed to Pakenham, somewhere I had been meaning to revisit for almost 10 years ...

' spring arches '

For me, the main attraction in this quaint little village is the Five Span Stone Arch Bridge, reportedly the only stone bridge of it's kind in continental North America. I'll leave you to use the link provided or Google it yourself to enjoy learning about this unique, historic, Ontario bridge.

A dull and overcast sky had me thinking of black and white at first, but then I imagined a splash of false colour using infrared. Looking for a n interesting composition, I went about making images on both sides of the river and both upstream and downstream of the bridge. Water in Ontario's Mississippi River was high from the spring melt, flowing fast and full through all five of the arches and I tread carefully on the slippery riverside rock to get this feature image.

Photo of the Week 2021-12-13

Just back from a visit with my son in Eastern Ontario and I realized that I had images from the previous visit to share ...

From our first visit to the new location for Revolve Farms and an opportunity for Matt & Claire to walk us around, sharing their vision for their new home ...

There was so much to catch our eye during the time we spent wandering and exploring this unique property. In particular, the building sections raised by the previous owner, with stone from the property, are one signature feature (there are a few others).

The stone house, workshop and outdoor kitchen area are without a doubt, anchoring elements of this special, special place.

There is work to be done. Completing what the previous owner started, altering and adding their own touch, Matt & Claire are set to bring a dream to life ... and I can't wait to watch it all happen (and maybe help a bit where I can along the way)

Photo of the Week 2017-10-30

I love the colours of Boston Ivy in the fall, and Sunday while out and about it was no exception ... so I took some time to do a photographic study of the vines clinging to some limestone walls and wooden trellis' ... I hope you enjoy.

Photo of the Week 2016-10-24

I enjoy all of the seasons but fall is my favourite time of year for hikes and photography outdoors. After a spring and summer of fresh lush greens, there is a slow warming of colour while the greens take on a yellow hue. As temperatures drop the pace quickens, the colours rush through variations of gold, orange and red. Having only weekends with time available for photography, the change seems to happen so fast that I'm only able to capture a fraction of it through my lens.

This past weekend I went out for a drive in search of colour. Overcast skies, flat light and spits of rain here and there were not the inspiration that I had hoped for. Looking for something a bit different, I ended up in the quaint town of Elora. It's always an interesting place to photograph and this time of year I expected that there might be some colour splashed about to make for some interesting images. While I didn't find the vibrant colours in many of the areas I chose to explore, a shaft of sunlight fell on a patch of red down one alley as I walked by, and of course I had to go check it out.

Red Creeper
Soon, as fall matures and gives way to winter, this red and other warm colours will be gone. Winter will arrive with it's cool palette of tones.
