Photo of the Week 2022-12-12

A corruption to my Lightroom catalogue file had me scratching my head trying to figure out what had happened and during the recovery process I found some unfinished work from early October of this year ...

' Tranquility Base is right here ... '

A three frame stitched panorama depicting the end to a fall sunset on Hay Bay, Lake Huron, Northern Bruce Peninsula ON, my 'Tranquility Base'

Oh ... the corruption issue, it's fixed. Thankfully I know my way around a computer well enough to fix most things like this. My backup process came in handy again, though now that it's fixed, I think I could likely have got by without one. However, having multiple backups sure helps me to stay level headed and focus on the fix rather than what I've lost.

Again I'm reminded to go back through my catalogue of images to see what I've overlooked or forgotten about as I continue to add more and more and more ...

Every sunset paints a different scene

' sunset serenity '

As the seasons change and the sun's trek across the sky slides, near the summer solstice it reaches far enough north to set just out of sight, beyond the mouth of our little bay. The next few months will see the sun's orb will drop behind the trees and out of view before sliding under the horizon each night.

Photo of the Week 2020-10-05

There are times when there is nothing recent that I'm moved to process and post. During such times I look to the catalogue and the collection of images I have accumulated for something to share. I have some candidates flagged for processing, some have already been processed and some flagged and ready for posting.

There are also times like the past couple of weeks, where I've captured a number of images I'm eager to review, process and share, and ... there is a bit of a backlog. I've been here before. I'm able to post new content frequently to my social media accounts. The number may dwindle over the coming days as the emotion attached to seeing, responding, capturing fades and the internal editor asserts himself. We'll see which make the cut and what hits the cutting room floor ...

At the moment, there are several sunset images in the queue, all from Hay Bay, Tobermory. So for this week, I'll share back to back sunsets from Sept 20 & 21 as summer 2020 slipped into history ...

burning bush
As sun begins to set on the winter of '18/'19, I find myself lamenting the change. While social media vibrates with howling and whining about another snow storm or colder temperatures, I shake my head at those never content with Canadian weather ... it's been like this (or worse) for centuries, why expect anything different.

A friend recently opined, "I think if people had stuff to do in the winter like you or myself they would enjoy it more" and I absolutely believe he has the truth of it. That I love being outside in winter is no surprise to followers of this blog, my photography and social media streams. Having "stuff to do", and enjoy doing in winter, is a big part of this.

Up north for the weekend to embrace as much of what remains of winter, I made sure to get out and take it all in. A morning walk to freshen my mind had me out, camera in hand, in silence so peaceful that I could literally hear the snow falling on my jacket with birds chirping as they hopped around the branches of roadside trees. Further along, I stopped to investigate a 'knocking' sound and quickly recognized the random pattern of a Pileated Woodpecker hammering on a dead snag nearby. Climbing over the snowbank attempting to get a view. I sunk to mid-thigh in snow and was left chuckling only to see a large black winged blur make it's getaway while I struggled to extricate myself (after quickly checking to see if anyone/anything had noticed).

Later that day, when others may have been thinking of starting dinner or making a fire to hunker down with inside, I filled a photo backpack, strapped on snowshoes and headed outside. A suspected coyote den location was beckoning me to see if I could catch some activity in the fading light. A breeze off the lake was up and I felt it's invigorating touch on my face as I took up a position across from where I had seen tracks of coming and going ...

Standing, kneeling, sitting in wait, I listened to the sound of wind off the lake, watched the loose snow swirl over the frozen surface ... for quite some time ... until with no activity from the coyote, I turned my lens to the gorgeous Huron sky, satisfied to make another series of sunset images before heading home ...

'heading home'
Not long now and I'll have to replace snowshoes with the kayak and paddle. But this outing produced a number of images that may yet find their way off my hard-drive. For now, it's the image 'burning bush' (above) that makes the cut for Photo of the Week.

Just wrap yourself in the magnificent blanket of evening's calm ...

mirrored magenta
Dinner complete, dishes done, kitchen tidied up ... we headed down to the shore and lit a fire. A canoe of animated youths returned home, shore-side activities came to an end, voices across the water faded. We let ourselves be wrapped in the blanket of evening's calm.

Photo of the Week 2017-08-28

This past weekend was the 3rd annual weekend at the cottage with Lynn's older sister and her family. This year Bill and Cathy stayed with us while Michael, Melissa, Hannah and Thompson stayed at Lands End Campground across the bay.

Although timing had not been in my favour for night sky shots for a while. We were fortunate enough to have 3 great days of weather and 3 wickedly clear nights where the night sky was dark, full of stars and the Milky Way ... and I was able to fight through the siren call of the sheets as darkness falls ;-)

I managed to make it late enough on 3 consecutive nights to see the night sky complete with Milky Way from the shore in front of the fire pit, this image was made the first night and it didn't get any better than this ... how could it ?

Winter Morning Hues 2017-03-12
Instead of bemoaning the loss of an hour of sleep, I was up just after 5:00 am (would have been 4:00 am without the change back to DST) having morning coffee and puttering about on the computer when I decided I should open the blinds and enjoy the arrival of dawn.

Daylight slowly arrived and muted hues of pink, purple and magenta began to glow in the western sky as sun prepared to crest the opposite horizon. Gradually, the sun would top the treeline and direct light would begin to spill onto the iced waters of the bay. The magical transition wouldn't last long and I began preparations, donning some gear to keep out the -15*C morning air and readying my camera gear.

With spare batteries and anticipation, I exchanged the warm comfort of the cottage, for the icy chill of morning air, the crunch of the frozen shore and the otherwise sublime silence of a winter morning to capture the magnificent hues ...

Photo of the Week 2016-09-05

The most difficult aspect to photographing the night sky, stars and the Milky Way is staying up late enough these days ;-)

With another summer coming to an end, daylight hours are becoming shorter, darkness comes earlier, and so too does the time when stars and the Milky Way come out for night photography. It's a gradual change, but at some point it grabs your attention and you realize that at this time not so long ago it was still light out and perhaps the sun had not yet set.

With a clear night sky a week ago, it was only 10:00 pm when the stars were out in all their glory with the Milky Way easily visible to the naked eye ... oh how I love the view when light pollution from the major populations centres is far away and the magic is revealed.

With a little help from quality gear and some digital enhancement, the images can be breathtaking ...

Photo of the Week 2016-08-29

During a recent paddle on Hay Bay, we headed into Ragged Bight, an inlet at the head of the bay, to check out the cottages and summer activity from the water. You get a completely different impression from the water. Viewing things from roadside...

Roadside, the back, and there is a bit of a story around what is back and front at our place, so let me take a moment to set the record straight ...

When we were looking for a place a few years back, we looked in Southampton, Sauble Beach and other places where properties were not on the water. They weren't what I had mind when I thought "cottage". To me a cottage is a "waterfront" property, it has water "frontage", hence the front of the cottage faces the water, at least it does at our place ... in my opinion and what other opinion really matters right?

This of course is a regular point of of discussion with guests and of course Lynn. I don't get why everyone is confused. It's really quite simple (to me). Water = Front, Road = Back. That's all there is to it. So if you ever come visit, get it straight please.
 ;-)

... shows you a different side (the back) and I see that side on our drive in, on our drive out, on my regular morning walks with Murphy. Seeing things from the water (the front) is a fresh look and I found some interesting scenes that warranted breaking the camera out of the dry-bag to make a few images. The one below captures a dock that has seen better days and a property that I imagine doesn't see much activity, but it makes for a nice waterside scene with some character and invites you to make up your own background story.
