I really enjoy finding a gem hidden in the rough. With a little cleaning and polishing they can really shine :-)

Previously hidden or at least overlooked among hundreds of images made during a trip to Newfoundland in 2011, I stubbed my toe on this one as I was scanning through the library. Looking for something suitable to print and frame as a gift for someone who loves Newfoundland, this image of an iconic seaside home near Tors Cove jumped out at me.

Wondering why this stood out and grabbed my attention now, more than it did during an initial review of the files from the trip ... I can only think it was because I was looking for something particular to suit a square crop. The original image is 3x4 aspect ratio as captured in camera with a Canon G12 and although decent, the right side of the image is rather blah. That's likely the reason it did not make the cut during initial editing. ... but with a square crop in mind that would focus on the house, it actually worked nicely. A little processing and an artistic vignette finished it off perfectly.

... now printed, framed and gifted for cousin Amanda's birthday.

Yet again, I am reminded that I should go back through the image collection from time to time, "there's gold in them thar' hills".

Photo of the Week 2017-03-20

There is nothing quite like stepping out into the fresh, peaceful quiet of a winter morning with sun yet to peak over the tree line and spill it's light into view.

Watching the daylight arrive from my seat at the table while having morning coffee, again I decided to head down and the shore to make some images during the "magic hour" of light. It's really not even a full hour, that fleeting period just before the sun crests the horizon or tree line when all before you is bathed in silky soft, cool light. Then the sun soon peaks out and it all changes, it becomes warmer and gets slightly more harsh ... when the "golden hour" following "magic hour " arrives. So I needed to be out and ready at just the right time ...

I particularly like how the western horizon over Lake Huron glows with magenta and pink when skies are clear at this time of morning and turn my lens in that direction for images like the one below.

As we say farewell to winter on this the first official day of Spring 2017, know I will miss crisp mornings and scenes like this on 'the Bruce' ...  but only until next winter.

Winter Morning Hues 2017-03-12

Instead of bemoaning the loss of an hour of sleep, I was up just after 5:00 am (would have been 4:00 am without the change back to DST) having morning coffee and puttering about on the computer when I decided I should open the blinds and enjoy the arrival of dawn.

Daylight slowly arrived and muted hues of pink, purple and magenta began to glow in the western sky as sun prepared to crest the opposite horizon. Gradually, the sun would top the treeline and direct light would begin to spill onto the iced waters of the bay. The magical transition wouldn't last long and I began preparations, donning some gear to keep out the -15*C morning air and readying my camera gear.

With spare batteries and anticipation, I exchanged the warm comfort of the cottage, for the icy chill of morning air, the crunch of the frozen shore and the otherwise sublime silence of a winter morning to capture the magnificent hues ...

Photo of the Week 2017-03-06

Selecting a single photo for a local exhibition of work from the Guelph Photographer's Guild at Einstein's Café was not as difficult as you might think. My Library is comprised of tens of thousands of original captures, thousands of of which have been processed and posted online or printed but ... there is one image that, for me, that has always stood out from all others.

'Sky Stones' is an image that I made a number of years ago and for me has stood the test of time. What I found surprising is that I've never posted it as my Photo of the Week ... likely because it was made long enough ago to be before I started this blog. I've used the image as a key piece for shows and display over the years and recently gave away a large print as a gift to special friends for their new office.

No significant processing trickery, just rocks in still waters on a calm day combined with the reflection of a cloudy sky ...
