Memories of a Forest Walk

The colours of fall are fast  disappearing

Winds tear the remaining leaves off branches.

Memories of walks amongst the glowing fall forest,

Soon too will fade ...

Always on the lookout for a storm coming in off Lake Huron, I find it somewhat of a challenge given that our cottage is set back into the trees and faces south, south-east. Monitoring the weather forecast and keeping a eye to the west as much as possible and of course being up on the Bruce Peninsula had yet to prove successful.

I'd seen many images of storm fronts coming in across Huron from locations further south on the Bruce, Oliphant, Southampton, Port Elgin and further down to Goderich. I wanted something from further north where I spend a lot of time ... and then Lynn came back from picking up some things in the village saying "you should see the black sky heading this way!"

... I ran for the camera.

Just approaching the tip of the peninsula and about to pass right over us was a dramatic shelf cloud at the storm front. I made a large series of images capturing the various stages of the storm from slightly different points of view around or shoreline. Above is a collage of select images in sequence that shows the passing storm.

Between a 50th birthday celebration for a friend Friday night, a (non-photography) trip up to Tobermorey Saturday and waking up with a migraine on Sunday, there wasn't much opportunity for photography this weekend ...

... so when I was sitting on the porch Sunday morning (make that mid-morning) having my first coffee of the day, looking at the Yucca in our front garden, I decided it would make a good subject for a photographic study.

For whatever reason, this Yucca only flowers every few years and the combination of sun and rain this year must have been right because it's putting on quite a display. I wanted to capture it while in full bloom and made a number of exposures with different lenses between the rain showers. The exercise challenged me to find ways to capture the essence of what was attracting my attention in the wet, hazy, subdued morning light. Ultimately I decided to create another collage using several of the Yucca images.
