Photo of the Week 2026-01-19

A recent meet-up with a 'photo phriend' provided a change of subject matter and caused me to work a little at making images. It had been a while since I'd been in an industrial setting, and interesting as it was, the Niagara Parks Power Station and Tunnel threw down the gauntlet. I'd long had an interest in the historical structures on the Canadian side of Niagara, but these locations were more than I would tackle back in my Urbex / Rurex days.

Since it opened in 2021, this now tourist attraction has been on my radar more out of historical interest in the construction and technology than photography. Still I was interested to see what I could capture through the lens. The images can be found on my flickr page starting here and ending with the 'Photo of the Week' image.

Photo of the Week 2018-07-09

It's a good thing when I have images from the past 3 weeks not yet posted and trouble deciding what to pick for my Photo of the Week ...

... so let's go with the most recent (and if you follow me on social media, you'll see some of the others as I get to posting).

From Sunday's visit to the Niagara area to see dear friends and spend some time together ...

Niagara River Whitewater
I knew I was going to like this image as soon as I came across the scene. Framed by the trees on either side and the shore, top and bottom, the Niagara River rages at the bottom of the gorge on it's way to the whirlpool. I found it hard to do justice to the beauty and power of nature in a still photograph, but this captured the scene at this point quite well ... just imagine the sound of Class 6 rapids 10 metres deep.

                          orchard elder

I've wanted to spend some time photographing the blooming orchards in the Niagara area for quite a while. Something always seemed to come up to prevent me from getting there at the right time.

This past Friday, I had some appointments for work scheduled in the area and at the conclusion of the work day I decided to take a leisurely, circuitous, scenic route home.

The layers of colour and old on new backdrop grabbed my attention in this scene. Ideally there would have been a little more contrast to the light, but heavy cloud cover made it very soft. The image needed a little help from post processing to pull the colours out a touch.

I love the character of the old fruit trees. Pruned, contorted, and knarled they stand vigil over the younger crowd.
