Well this feels a little different ...

After 4 months of working through images made during a trip to Scotland last September, I came to the end. Interrupted only thrice since returning, my posts to social media have showcased of images from 11 days of the trip. I first paused for a few days to showcase the awesome images captured during the 'once in a lifetime aurora event' 2024-10-10. The second time was to celebrate the return of Snowy Owls to the Bruce Peninsula after an absence of 3 years, the third, to say farewell to 2024 and ring in 2025 with the annual 'Last Light' - 'First Light' images (though these did not make it to all of my social streams).

So it feels different not writing about Scotland, my experiences and my time there. It is a truly magnificent place to visit, the people are incredible (even if some in the tourist hordes are not - such seems the case most places these days). Will I go back? I certainly plan to, maybe for a photo specific visit, maybe more of what I did this go round.

Now where am I ... oh ya, back at home in Canada. She's certainly a beauty as well. Let me turn to the images I've been making back home in Ontario. How about we start with a pair of bookends ...

' sparkling waters - heavy skies '

Having a front row seat to a view like this is nothing short of spectacular. Whether it's a dramatic sunset or mid-day cloudless blue skies, subtle morning pastel hues or angry storm fronts, the horizon separating Huron Waters from Huron Skies always gets my attention ...

This image is a heavy crop in an aspect ratio using multiples of the 'golden ratio'. It's an aspect ratio I use for pseudo panoramas when cropping from the original file. The original capture was made while experimenting with my R5 set up in crop mode for wildlife with  my EF100-400L and 1.4x converter. I was making some test shots earlier and used the same setup to capture a very selective slice of the view out over "La Mer Douce".

Photo of the Week 2013-12-30

I spent some time this past weekend with friends using the cottage as a base for some winter photography on "the Bruce". There were no spectacular sunrises or sunsets, no frigid temperatures or winter storms.

There was however, much laughter and camaraderie between 3 friends who share a love of photography, the outdoors and their own quest to release the artist within. Each day after our photo outings, we would return to the cottage to relax and the easy conversation would wander from the subject photography, to nature, food, family and on. I always take something away from these encounters thanks to friends who are so willing to share their thoughts and experience.

Earth Hour 2013

What do I decide to do for Earth Hour 2013 ? Well there's a comet, PANSTARRS, that is visiting earth and these types of things are more easily seen when and where light pollution is lower so why not head out and see if I can find and photograph it. One of my photo friends, Vince, had success recently, but he's more experienced at night sky photography

Some botched communication led to just Alan and I heading out to Pilkington Outlook in Waterloo Region to lay eyes and lenses on night skies. The text and email banter with the Third Musketeer (Swiss Guard may be more accurate), had us laughing and trading "zingers" back and forth as he sat at home in the warmth enjoying some Mondavi. (Sure Patrick, you meant Sunday night - LOL)

I can't say that the light pollution was any less for earth Hour as the moon was near full and provided lots of light to traipse around the Outlook between 8 and 10 pm. We never did see PANSTARRS because clouds were covering that part of the sky or perhaps because we didn't know exactly where to look.

After misidentifying a number of the astral bodies we came a way with a few images of the night sky, nothing particularly good, 'cause this stuff ain't easy. Mostly neurochromes (memories) and one passable, slightly blurry shot of the Orion Nebula.
