Winter weather provides me with many opportunities for for photography and I don't always take advantage of them. I find my outings to drive the backroads within reach of home have become much less frequent. When I do take a backroad, stops to photograph have become less frequent and I find myself thinking "I should have stopped back there ... " and good photo opportunities are missed.

In an attempt to rectify things, on the heels of a chance finding of the scene in last weeks post, I purposefully gathered up the needed kit and headed out looking for additions to the series 'rural winter'

I've driven by this farm countless times as it's very close to home. I've made photographs at and around it but not composed in favourable winter conditions to create something worthy of including in 'rural winter', until now.

' once upon a clearing '

' a place to meander '

On my Boxing Day foggy morning walk, I detoured to check out 'the clearing', a magical spot that caught and has held my interest since my first romp though the woods of the Revolve Farms property.

It's not an area cleared of all trees, but certainly it's character is very different from the adjacent woods.
The ground is soft, a considerable portion of it is covered in reindeer lichen and moss that feels quiet underfoot. Clusters of juniper dot the spaces between trees, suggesting that you meander your way around.

On this day, the clearing was particularly mystical. Fog and barren trees combined with a limited colour palette to create something special that I attempted to capture in camera and bring to these images with some touches in post processing.

Happy that winter, or at least a few winter days have arrived, I've been wanting to get out with camera as much as I can to capture all of the beauty I can ... while it lasts.

I had spent some time in Eastern Ontario, in Rideau Lakes near Perth, and enjoyed exploring and photographing in the area a little. The shortly after I returned home, the urge to get up to our place on 'the Bruce' won out and I was off again in search of winter scenes to capture.

' Mermaid's Winter Veil '

Relatively warm, open waters and frigid air temperature combine to shroud the shore of Mermaid Cove in winter fog and create this scene for me to stand and admire before making this capture.
