A week into spring and I'm still thinking of the final days of winter, sun-filled days when the ice and snow were still hanging around to enhance the scene for my photography ...

Last Icy Sunrise

This is the last icy sunrise I was able to capture on Hay Bay for winter 2021.

Until the spring wildflowers make their entrance, I'll be dreaming of winter past, and the photo opportunities offered.

I'm really going to miss winter, particularly since what we had wasn't really much of a winter at all. A trek out to the Lake Huron shoreline on Cape Hurd just a couple of days before the official start of spring, showed how winter is clearly in the rear view mirror for another year. The usual buildup of ice is all but gone, what was formed, now melted with unseasonably warm temperatures and days of bright sunshine.

I took advantage of a last opportunity to capture the beauty offered by Canadian winter ...

A bit of the back story ...

I invited my cousin Steve up to the cottage and we had a couple of days to show him around, eat well, chat about life and generally enjoy some time together. We had hiked the Hobson Trail out to the Huron shore and were exploring along the rocks to the south. We got to an area where there were a few remnants of ice and snow pushed up. The translucent turquoise glow on the underside from the strong sunlight caught my eye and I started working to find a composition. Leaning way over and shooting up under the ice I called to Steve and said "I have just the title for this one". His response ... "well from what I see right now, it should be called Doug's ass". I damn near fell over on my face laughing. Good people and good humour make for good times.

When I get a bit sluggish and the creative inspiration falters it can help to try something different ...

farm lane essence

I've always liked the look of ink wash ... here I've applied an effect in attempt to simulate that look with just a touch of colour.

Always on the lookout for wildlife as I travel to and from Tobermory, this time of year has my "eyes peeled" for snowy owls. I usually see at least one, sometimes more. But last week, as we drove out of the hot spot for owl sightings, I was about to take a break from scanning the area to either side of the highway when I noticed something large perched in a tree.

Nicely perched, this bald eagle was close enough for me to park roadside and shoot from the vehicle without disturbing it too much. Though it is quite evident that it knew I was there, I did not approach any closer than other passing traffic and got what shots I could without causing it to fly off.

I make a point of describing how I approached photographing this magnificent bird because I've seen first hand how others with camera (I hesitate to call them photographers) are far too careless and disruptive in their approach. It's not just about getting the shot. It's about capturing a genuine wildlife moment with as little stress to to the subject as possible.

note: these images are 35% crops from the original captures, even with my 7DII, EF100-400 II and 1.4x Extender for a effective focal length of ~900mm

I used to be up and out early with camera(s) on weekend mornings back when I working. Life has changed in retirement, the urgency to get up and get out is not there as it once was. It's easy to feel like there is more time for such things. Coffee and a relaxed start to the day are more the norm these days and I just don't make it priority ... but when I do manage to get up and out early, images like this make it more than worth while.

Note to self: Maybe set a couple of days in the week to get up and get out early for photography ;-)
